Upgraded Front Brake – Suzuki S40 Boulevard (2013)

Ever search for photos of a Suzuki S40 (nee’ LS650 Savage) and notice everybody shoots from right-side of the bike?

I personally think that’s because we’re all painfully aware of how woefully inadequate the 30+ year old solid single front-disc with a single pot caliper has been (especially when freeway speeds started jumping up.) And why would you want to take a photo of something that heats up too fast, feels spongy, even with better brake lines, and isn’t so bad tooling around and cruising at low speeds, but feels like you’re riding a Schwinn Stingray (wherein your rear drum brake locks up, and skids along, while the front is still grabbing air.)

But because of a rather creative genius in the automotive engineering world, he introduces this:

And now Suzuki S40 and LS 650 (and Ryca conversion) owners can have fully-floating rebuildable discs with dual-pot calipers and bring their bikes into the 21st century (or at least into the last decade of the 20th, if you prefer.)  It’s not ABS (which would cost more than the whole bike) but it’s a welcome upgrade that bolts-on (literally) and is very well-engineered and designed using already proven technology (just assembled in a different way, with an engineer’s eye towards functionality and purpose).

It’s affordable, and just what this little kicker needed among the plethora of engine-specific upgrades that already address more horsepower (web cams, big bore kits, bigger carburetors and jetting, revised exhausts, etc.).

Now you can safely stop this thing.

Ok Folks, I’ve been here are Oracle Open World for a few days now.  In that time, I’ve had numerous conversations about running Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c on Oracle Database 12c.  I will be honest and say that I’ve enjoyed these conversations; however, after about the fourth time I decided I need to write a quick post on the explanation discussed in these conversations.

Enterprise Manager 12.1.0.4.0 – Post Upgrade Tasks

Must keep up with OEM 12c Grid Control updates…

With the new release of Enterprise Manager, I upgraded my 12.1.0.3.0 installation successfully using the superb documentation here. It is however, important to note that the post-steps are also important. For example, upgrading (at the very least) the Management Agent on the OMS host, and de-installation of the old-OMS home. Gokhan Atil wrote a good post on the actual upgrade process which is available on his blog.

Management Agent Upgrade on the OMS Host:

The upgrade process for agents has not changed since EM’s previous 12c releases.

1. Navigate to the “Upgrade Agents” link under the Setup -> Manage Cloud Control menu.

2. Select the agent(s) for the OMS Hosts and click “OK”.

3. With the Agents selected, click on “Submit”. You have the option to override the “Privileged Credentials” to run the root.sh script.

4. The submitted job takes a few minutes before it completes (hopefully successfully!).

R12.2 Upgrade – Registering New Application Modules – r122_new_custsch.ksh

Note: This script is based upon an OEL 5.9 environment with a completed first-stage R12.2 e-Business Suite upgrade from 12.1.3. Using a pre-existing registered module (ZFA – Oracle Financial Analyzer in our case), this clones the settings required to fulfill the R12.2 upgrade pre-requisite check for additonal applications, which had been added since the 12.1.3 release.) Upgrade Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c (12.1.0.2) to 12.1.0.3

And we’re still awaiting 12c Database certification for the Repository.

In order to upgrade our OEM environment from 12.1.0.2 to 12.1.0.3 we need to download the latest version of OEM from either http://otn.oracle.com or from http://edelivery.oracle.com. Once we have the files needed to upgrade, we need to stage them in a location that is central.

Note: Most downloads on Linux will be placed in the /home/oracle/Downloads directory.

Once we are in the directory where the downloaded files are, we need to unzip these files.

#> unzip em12103_linux64_disk1.zip –d ./12.1.0.3

The zip command needs to be repeated for all of the files downloaded.

Next, we need to move into the directory where we unzipped everything and run the runInstaller.

#> cd ./12.1.0.3

#> ./runInstaller &

When the installer starts, we will be greeted with our standard Oracle Installation Wizard. To upgrade the OEM to 12.1.0.3, consists of nine steps. We will review these nine steps throughout this posting.

Change VARCHAR2 to 32K – 12c Edition

Oracle has made a few changes to the database to allow organizations to reduce the cost of migrating to Oracle 12c.  One of these changes is with the size limits that have been placed on the VARCHAR2, NVARCHAR2 and RAW data types.  In past versions of Oracle database the maximum size for these data types were 4,000 bytes.  In Oracle 12c, these data types can now  be increased to 32,767 bytes.

In order to set these data types to use the larger setting, the MAX_STRING_SIZE parameter needs to be set.  The only values that this parameter can take is STANDARD and EXTENDED.  Once the parameter has been set to EXTENDED, you cannot go back to STANDARD.

Note: Altering MAX_STRING_SIZE will update database objects and possibly invalidate them
